Father and son, Trevor, and Chris Stilling, go head-to-head in the opening round of the Australian Rally Championship in Canberra this weekend.
Trevor Stilling has an impressive list of wins and placings in 2WD and classic competitions in a racing career spanning over 30 years. In 2020 Trevor took out the 2WD Australian Rally championship cup in a Nissan Silvia and in 2021 he won the classic cup category in the Australian Rally Championship series. This year he is competing in a Datsun Stanza competing for the Classic cup as well as other categories including the NSW and ACT championship series class categories.
Having won many classic awards over the years including, the 2017 Australian Classic rally championship, Trevor Stilling is well placed to take out the classic series win in 2022. Stilling acknowledged the support from his experienced codriver Jon Thompson and the team at High Country Automotive in Cooma.
Chris Stilling, will also be one to watch in the event. The younger Stilling has the speed and drive to place in the top ten and even higher for his class and junior cup category.
Chris Stilling who has seeded to start in front of his dad after posting impressive times in the same event last year displayed his impressive driving skills during the Australia Rally Championship test day held last month. Chris said, ‘the car is ready, I am ready, and I have an experienced navigator for the rally. Claire has competed in many high-level events including the Targa rally.’ This is the first time Chris Stilling will be starting in front of his father and when asked if this made him nervous, he said, ‘I will be running my own race, dad is very experienced, so my aim is to go one better this year and try and stay in front of him.’
Chris came third in the 2020 junior cup and the 2WD series in the Australian Rally Championship and would have placed higher in the junior cup standings had his car not damaged a drive train in the final stages of the event. Chris Stilling and co-driver Claire Buccini will be aboard the Simply Music Management Toyota Corolla.
One thing is certain father and son will bring the action and while their cars are competing in different classes when you watch them in action you can see the similar driving styles.
