Former Australian Foreign Affairs Minister Alexander Downer AC and former South Australian Premier Mike Rann AC jointly announced their eponymous scholarship for 2022 at a special event at the Adelaide Town Hall on 13 October 2022.

With speeches by Leader of the Opposition, the Hon Peter Malinauskas MP, the Commissioner for Public Sector Employment Erma Ranieri PSM, the Lord Mayor of Adelaide Sandy Verschoor, and Chief Executive Officer of the City of Adelaide and alumnus of Carnegie Mellon Clare Mockler, the event showcased the value and impact of the highest scholarship of CMU in Australia.

In attendance were Chief Executives of major South Australia government departments, including Mr Nick Reade of the Department of Premier and Cabinet, Mr David Reynolds of the Department of Treasury and Finance, Mr John Schutz of the Department for Environment and Water, and Mr Chris Beattie of SA State Emergency Services. Chief Executives of major corporations were also present, notably Mr Mike Duhne of Google Cloud SA, Mr David Maxwell of Cooper Energy, and Mr John George of MGA and Whittles Group of Companies.

In his introduction, Carnegie Mellon University in Australia Head and Professor Emil Bolongaita said that “the threat of the skills gap in SA in the areas of technology, analytics and policy is an opportunity for CMU to exercise leadership.” He said that an unprecedented 20 Downer-Rann Scholarships would be funded for the coming January 2022 intake, with 10 of them allocated for the South Australian public sector.

In her address, Commissioner for Public Sector Employment Erma Ranieri, said: “As the state’s largest employer, it’s vital that our workforce is supported to advance their skills in contemporary public sector management to ensure we can make a difference in the lives of the community we serve.”

She added: “Thanks to the partnership between Carnegie Mellon University and my office, through the South Australian Leadership Academy, the 10 Downer-Rann scholarships will enable us to increase our investment in the sector's greatest asset – our people."

The programs covered by the scholarships are the following:

  • Master of Science in Public Policy and Management
  • Master of Science in Information Technology Management
  • Master of Science in Business Intelligence and Data Analytics

These programs offered in Adelaide are the same as those offered at the main campus of Carnegie Mellon University in the U.S. The degree is awarded from the US and accredited in both Australia and the US. The courses may be taken for 12 months full-time or up to 5 years part-time.

The Downer-Rann Scholarships are the highest scholarship of CMU in Australia. The scholarship value represents 85% of the cost of the same degree in the US, and 60% of the cost of the Australian degree. Applications close November 30, 2021. To find out more and to apply click here.
