The search is on for South Australia’s most innovative women, with the launch of the 7th Annual Winnovation Awards.
The awards program has in past years uncovered talent such as Life Whisperer’s Michelle Perugini, CareApp’s Allison Nikula and Mandi Dimitriadis of 3D printing innovator Makers Empire. Organiser Women In Innovation SA plans to hold an awards event with online and 'live' components in November to rival last year’s record-breaking attendance at the National Wine Centre.
Women In Innovation Chair Nicole Swaine said COVID-19 had wreaked havoc with the organisation’s popular events calendar, but its webcasts had proved to be a popular substitute for face to face networking.
“Our recent personal development series attracted over 280 women with many saying they were glad to attend online because they could slot in the events around childcare and working from home,” Ms Swaine said.
“The board decided that we could think innovatively to launch Winnovation and even hold our annual celebration virtually, if necessary. For the first time, due to the lack of personal contact, we are also offering awards mentoring by phone and meeting software, to help people put their best face forward in their applications. This will give women a chance for independent third-party feedback to help them zero in on their innovation.”
Ms Swaine said the awards encourage people to nominate others or self-nominate – and to enter again if you missed out last time, as with each year your experience grows.
“The awards themselves are open across all kinds of endeavours, from entrepreneurs and business founders, to women breaking down barriers in their careers, to researchers across all disciplines in our universities,” Ms Swaine said.
“We are pleased to say that FIXE, the State’s focal point for innovation, has become a major sponsor this year, with Department of Education backing the Young Innovator category, so we are looking forward to engaging even more closely this year with younger women.
“They join continuing sponsors UniSA, Bendigo Bank, Madderns Patent Attorneys, Department of Environment and Water, SA Power Networks and Zonte’s Footsteps, to back the important work of our members.”
