An innovative new South Australian start-up has taken the concept of shopping at a Farmers Market to a whole new level by building and launching Toast The Locals, an online marketplace where lovers of quality Artisan food and drink can now source and shop directly with the people who make it.
Since launching in February this year, Toast The Locals has already attracted 30 Artisan food and beverage businesses which have registered to set up their free online shop - and this number is growing weekly. With over 150 quality products already available on Toast The Locals, including alcohol, there seems to be no stopping the number of Australian Artisan producers who are jumping on board.
Think Artisan cheese from Barossa Valley Cheese Company, award winning sauces, vinaigrettes, condiments, dukkahs, infused olive oils and more from well-known Artisan brands, including Matchetts and Big Sissy Foods, Spice Girlz Gourmet, Port Willunga Fine Foods, Grunds Gourmet, Relish The Barossa, The Gourmet Entertainer, and more. Fancy some Macadamia Nut Toffee with milk choc from Dickins’ Delights in Mt Gambier, or quality Almonds and Almond Butters from The Almond Farmer in SA’s Riverland? You’ll find them on Toast The Locals, along with an impressive and growing list of premium Artisan wines. Craft beers and award winning gins will be coming on next.
Each Artisan is encouraged to tell their unique story in their online shop and share photos and videos - all part of helping customers to learn about the passionate people behind the products and the brands they can find. These include organic, sustainably grown and pesticide free products, as well as gluten, dairy and nut free, vegan, paleo and more.
“The business model is simple, in that we want to provide a place where Artisan growers, makers and producers from all over Australia, can be easily found by the people looking to source and cook with high quality and locally made Australian products,” says Angela Leske, Founder of Toast The Locals.
“People are becoming increasingly interested in knowing where their food and drink comes from and sourcing it directly. On Toast The Locals they can shop with any number of Artisans, who have made the products and then checkout in one easy shopping transaction. Each Artisan receives their order immediately and then packs and ships the products straight to the customer's door. Another advantage for Artisans and customers is that we profit-share over 87% of each sale straight back to the Artisans, meaning that the majority of the profit goes directly to the people making the products and not some middle person or large supermarket chain.”
A further feature of Toast The Locals is the Events section, which is built to host and market unique Artisan food and drink experiences. Here food and wine lovers can find and book tickets to local Artisan events hosted on the marketplace. This includes Toast The Locals own signature events, such as the Producers Plate ™ long table dinners, which are designed to bring people back to the source of quality food and drink production in a unique regional setting. These dinners are a true collaboration with a local renowned Chef and host farm or venue, local Artisans and their unique products.
The highly acclaimed Star of Greece at Pt. Willunga in South Australia was the recent host for a Producers Plate long table dinner for 50, which celebrated the Artisan foods, wines and craft beers of the Fleurieu Peninsula at a sumptuous 4-course food and wine paired dinner. Here Artisans had the opportunity to showcase and sample their products to guests in an Artisans marketplace over canapes and cocktails and then feature in the menu, which was created for the dinner by Chef Brett Worral.
“We are Unashamedly Artisan and Unashamedly Australian!” says Angela,
“And we are committed to building an Australia-wide community of ‘Toasties’, (consumers) who all want to get behind and support our small Australian Artisans. We encourage you to go shopping on Toast The Locals and stock your pantry's and cellars with these unique products that have been made with passion and dedication by our Locals.”
Trish White, Owner of Port Willunga Fine Foods, Pt. Willunga, South Australia. "We have seen these platforms come and go...not so with Toast The Locals who have a passionate leader in Angela Leske driving. We are very excited to be on board and showcase our unique products to the world."
Mark Slade, Director of Purple Hands Wines, Barossa Valley, South Australia. " Purple Hands is a boutique artisan wine label from the southern Barossa. It is great to be part of Toast The Locals because it helps raise our brand awareness to those who love the artisan food and wine concept, and Angela’s enthusiasm and support for the artisan producers is something to admire."
