There’s a lot of information going around about the latest medical phenomena, being the use of Shockwave therapy in injury treatment and pain management, but what is the truth about these machines and how do they work? Recently I sat down with Michael Langdon, the CEO of one of Australia’s leading machine suppliers, and asked some probing questions.

Hi Michael, thanks for joining me today. Now in brief can you quickly explain what Shockwave Therapy actually is?

Certainly Mark; so Extracorporeal Shockwave Therapy, or ESWT as it is sometimes referred to, is a treatment used in management of pain and rapid recovery of injury, particularly for race horses. Shock waves are acoustic waves that are administered to injury points to improve circulation, breakdown scar tissue and assist formation of new blood vessels.

So what are the specific advantages of Shockwave Therapy over other treatment regimes, particularly for the equine industry?

Well together with being a non-surgical therapy, with no need for painkillers, it’s an ideal therapy to speed up recovery and cure various indications causing acute or chronic pain. Shockwave is an acoustic wave, which carries high energy to painful spots and myoskeletal tissues. The energy promotes regeneration and reparative processes of the bones, tendons and other soft tissues.

Most practitioners understand that nutrient blood flow is necessary to start and maintain the repair processes of damaged tissue. The application of acoustic waves creates capillary micro-ruptures in tendon and bone, leading to much faster healing without the need for invasive surgery. Examples of where you might use shockwave are for treatment of sacroiliac issues, ligament injuries, treatment of trigger points and sore muscles.

That’s well answered and I think speaks to the equine market perfectly. Now your company represents a brand of Shockwave machine produced by Storz Medical. How are the Storz machines any better than the competition?

Well Mark, Storz is the world leader in Shockwave Therapy and their machines command 60% of the world market, which tells a story in itself. But essentially the Storz machine has more penetration depth and higher energy density levels than any of their competitors, which just leads to even faster recovery of the injury. Fast injury recovery allows your equine athlete to return to the track a lot sooner and in a sound condition.

Thanks Michael now as with any new equipment purchase it can often be confusing to filter through all the available options for the buyer. Do you have a favorite machine or is there a machine that really suits most equine applications?

Certainly, my favorite is a machine we call the MP 100 Ultra Vet. It’s a compact machine that suits treatment in any vet practice or racing stable.  The MP 100 Vet machine has all the features of some of the bigger machines and its strengths are in delayed healing of fractured bones, improved ligament & tendon injuries and the ability to eliminate muscle soreness, due to its analgesic effect, which are characteristics of all good ESWT machines.

So for anyone considering the purchase of a Shockwave Machine, what sort of investment are they looking at?

Great question Mark, and the options are many, but to keep it simple, a standard MP 100 Vet machine can be purchased on our introductory promotion at under $10,000 which is great value. Of course, there are options you can add to the machine to make it anything you want, including a touch screen monitor and additional transmitters for the handpiece.

That sounds like something to explore. Can you tell our readers how they can find out more about the discount and the favorable tax deductibility available right now?

Certainly Mark, so we have a simple way to qualify for the discount and if your readers just go to our MP100 page (at the link below) and just enter their email address we will issue a $990 discount code, which will bring the price of the entire machine under $10,000. This discount can be utilised right up until June 30th, so there is no pressure to buy and they can think through the entire process with clarity. We will also provide all the details on how they can claim the full cost of the purchase in the 2017/18 tax year.

Thanks for that Michael. So interested practitioners or trainers can click this link and get all the details, plus the $990 discount option.

So in summary Michael, what are the key points that trainers and physicians who are new to EWST should keep in mind?

I think that regardless of what brand the trainer or physician chooses, the fact is that adding a Shockwave machine to their repertoire will open up untold possibilities in animal care, by being able to offer the treatment of a diverse range of conditions including the likes of muscle soreness, scar tissue, pain relief, ligament injuries and feet problems from poor circulation, all in a non invasive, non surgical methodology that is fast and efficient, with almost instant results.

This keeps the animals happy, healthy and sound which sets up a model that helps performance animals return to the racetrack a lot faster and perform to the best of their ability. I always say, If you’re not using shockwave, you’re at the tail end of the field.
