Brisbane, Queensland: Careers-coach, Elise Stevens, is using her own mid-life career change to help other older women tackle ageism by overcoming their own self-confidence issues, in a series of workshops starting later this month in Brisbane.

Stevens is a podcaster, author and founder of Age Defying Careers, a careers-coaching service that helps women aged in their 40s and 50s deal with the confidence issues holding them back in their careers and lives.

Ms Stevens, whose own career began as an electrical engineer, has worked with some of Australia’s leading businesses, including Qantas and Coca-Cola Amatil. As she neared 50, she became acutely aware of issues of age discrimination, both professionally and through conversations with friends and family.

“There’s a lot of research now that very clearly shows how common age discrimination is – up to 1/3 of Australian workers say they’ve experienced age discrimination, either in their jobs or while looking for work,” says Ms Stevens.

“It’s even worse for older women when trying to get back into the workforce – that can sometimes take more than a year of job-hunting.

“Add to that the other stressors more common with ageing, including health issues, financial issues and family responsibilities, and mid-life women often find their confidence has taken a direct hit,” she says.

Elise Stevens, who also manages an online community for women aged 40+, will hold her first ‘How to Feel Fabulous in Your 40s and 50s’ workshop Saturday August 26, between 1pm and 3pm at Quest, Kelvin Grove.

This workshop, aimed at mid-life women, will help participants highlight their personal strengths – or, ‘find their Fabulous’, and put together an action plan to address the confidence issues affecting their professional and personal lives.

Bookings can be made through Eventbrite or Stevens’ own website: Age Defying Careers. Numbers are limited, so early registration is recommended.
