Thursday, May 11th, 2017 - Punt Club

Social sportsbetting startup Punt Club yesterday welcomed its integration with Ladbrokes as a major step in providing customers with choice and supporting a push for expansion to other markets in Europe.

While one of the giants of the global sportsbook market, Ladbrokes is still a relatively new operator in Australia having taken over the operations of and Betstar in 2015, and sees significant opportunity in an affiliate partnership with Punt Club.   “We’ve come from a tech startup mindset ourselves,” said CEO Jason Scott, “so facilitating the integration with Punt Club seems a natural extension of the innovative culture we’re proud of at Ladbrokes.”

The two companies remain fully independent and Punt Club is also maintaining their relationship with Tabcorp, operator of Luxbet and Punt Club’s betting fulfillment partner since their launch in 2011. “For us it’s not choosing one or the other,” Punt Club CEO Jason Neave explained. “Tabcorp and Luxbet have been good partners for us, but most affiliate businesses have multiple bookmaker relationships and it’s healthy to be able to offer our customers a choice. Ladbrokes is a relative newcomer here but they are a multi-billion dollar leader in Europe and that presents other opportunities to expand our business there.”

Punters clubs are effectively social betting syndicates, where friends pool some funds each week, bank some and take turns betting the rest on their favourite horses or sports teams. The kitty that accumulates over time is usually spent on a trip away, a share in a horse or just a big day at a major sporting event. While betting with your mates might sounds like fun, administering one was anything but. Punt Club introduced the world’s first online management tool to solve this problem, and the fact a few copycat products have popped up hasn’t deterred investors with former Atlassian engineer and architect of their flagship Jira product, Nick Menere, joining the board recently to guide product development.

With recruits of the calibre of Menere joining the team Neave is understandably bullish about the future. “Punters clubs are awesome fun and a great way to fund life experiences that combine sport and friendship. There is still plenty of upside in the Australian market and we will continue to focus on having the best product and best user experience there is,” he said. “Get the product right and our growth will take care of itself - having Nick join the team and a quality bookmaker partner like Ladbrokes on board will just contribute to that experience.”

Punt Club recently kicked off the launch of the footy seasons and the Autumn Racing Carnival with their Living Large promotion, where one lucky punter from Sydney won 8 tickets on a fully catered Friday afternoon superyacht cruise on Sydney Harbour followed by a premium hospitality package for 8 at Randwick to watch Winx make history in the Queen Elizabeth Stakes. ##

Punt Club is a social sportsbetting startup that lets groups of mates run their punters clubs online, without the admin nightmare usually associated with such an exercise. Incubated in Adelaide, South Australia, by digital agency The Distillery, Punt Club looks forward to the day when every sporting club, office social group, or bunch of mates, runs a punters club in the same way they run their footy tipping competitions.
